Gideon day 10 (off the ecmo spot)

11.30u

We are still at the hospital as of this morning because we have to get used to Gideon's new schedule again. Since yesterday, he gets more frequent and more frequent feedings, but with that his nursing moments change too. We were just getting used to a daily schedule and now we have to plan everything all over again. But we are willing to make up for it. Of course, we want to be at feeding moments as much as possible so we can give them ourselves.

Gideon seems to be a bit bothered by the CPAP, which is not strange as it is like a big snorkel on his nose. This doesn't stop him from turning his head so he regularly gets stuck. Hopefully he will switch to the low flow as soon as possible so that he will have more freedom of movement and less awkwardness on his head.

But other than that, he has been doing very well. He had a good night and this morning (in front of us) he pooped his nappy for the first time. Sounds crazy, but we were almost cheering. Now it seems all the meconium (which can cause constipation) is finally out of his little body. This in turn also helps the feed flow better.

He is starting to look better and better and (for us) is also becoming more baby with a little less tubing.

22.45u

I spent an hour and a half with Gideon tonight. What a special moment that was. That little loofie on my chest, being able to watch him all quiet while he slept and cuddling him gently. I could get used to that 🙂

He was also on low flow again for a while, but he still has to work hard to get enough oxygen in. We are curious to see how quickly he will master that.

Gideon is now taking 8 x 15ml feedings and almost nothing is coming back. So we wouldn't be surprised if he might go to 8 x 20ml tomorrow. And he is starting to regain some weight. His birth weight was 3400g and he weighed around 3200g just before he started feeding (2 days ago). Yesterday he now weighed 3300g so he will be back to birth weight soon. You can tell from everything that the feeding is doing him good. Healthy colour, some thicker legs again and most importantly better liver and bowel function.

And last but not least, he moved to a new place. The same ward (ICU) but no longer in an "ECMO spot". Now he lies among about 10 other kids which is a lot cozier, but also a bit busier with more beeps and alarms. But a step forward!

Your stories are so recognisable! We feel the same way! Also what you write about the poopy nappy ;-) is Gideon already on the ward or not yet? We are now one floor up and it's going well, only she spits up regularly. We hope you can go upstairs soon or closer to home!

I would almost say 'get used to it' ;-) I think that's all babyhood, that as soon as you think, we have a rhythm, the rhythm is different again ;-).

How incredibly nice to hear so much good news! Super that Gideon is doing so well, and that you keep us informed so faithfully. God is good! And you are great parents. Enjoy! X

I was actually wondering if his lungs are now as mature as little kids without his condition or are his lungs a bit smaller compared to them?

We all do want to stand here together in a grand mountain landscape and cheer and cheer and cheer and cheer and that the echo echoes endlessly. Then it adds a little to the overwhelmingly happy feeling we have for you!

Very touching and beautiful photos of the pouch, what a wonderful feeling this must be for you Marieke, but also for you Nathanael to see your wife and child like that. and it's not strange that you are cheering for these little things, they are such milestones and all equally special. Have a nice day together again.

Love from us
