Gideon day 16 (long line out)
16.00u
No news is good news. In this case, then...
Gideon is making great strides again. Today he is on 65ml with feedings and so the need for additional feeding via drip is no longer necessary. That plus the fact that the morphine has now stopped completely means that he no longer needed his long line drip in his leg so they took it out this morning. Another line less and now completely drip-free.
By comparison. A fortnight ago, he had about 3 different IVs and about 10 other lines that were also needed. The only thing he is now attached to is the low flow (or nighttime CPAP), heart rate and breathing sensors, saturation monitoring on his foot, catheter and gavage. It's a lot easier to change and pick him up now. And it makes him much more of a "normal" baby.
And from today (if he pulls it off) he is also on the low flow all day because he did so well yesterday with the 2 x 6 hours. At night, he may still be put on CPAP if he needs it.
This afternoon we went to the beach for a while. That's the name of the ward above the NICU where he is now. If he continues to do so well and does not need the CPAP support at all he will go there. Another big step but also exciting (for us). It is a much quieter ward with more older children. And there are smaller rooms such as single rooms where there is also a bed for a parent, or a 4-person room. Big difference from now where about 15 babies can lie including beeping care and agitation.
But they are very happy with how things are going. The upward trend is above average. What we like to hear is that the caregivers (of Gideon) think it is special that he is so calm and remains cheerful (of course he does cry sometimes, but easy to comfort). Of course, they try to avoid negative stimuli as much as possible, but that is far from always successful with draining, IV in and out, taking blood, surgery, etc. They say that many babies are often a lot more restless themselves after 2 weeks of this restlessness and, for example, are also reluctant to put something in their mouths because there has been too many negative stimuli. Gideon doesn't actually seem to be bothered by anything, our boy. But we also see this as protection that God has given and is giving him, because we cannot influence it.
It is also remarkable that Marieke can keep up with Gideon's pace. He now gets 8 x 65ml a day. That's a lot of milk, but production is trouble-free. Now to work on delivery. (That is, that he can drink by himself)
And just to show what Gideon looks like when he is awake here's a little video.
