Gideon day 72

21.45u

What a day. Only now do we actually notice how tired we are. Pretty much wrecked. But also happy with how everything went today.

It took quite a while this morning before they actually started the operation. This was because the arterial line they wanted to put on Gideon did not go well. Gideon was difficult to prick. In the end, they punctured Gideon completely with the final result being 2 infusions (hand and foot) and a long line in the neck artery.

When the surgery was done, before Gideon was ready to be transported, we had a quick chat with the surgeons about how things were going. The operation itself went smoothly in the end. They found the liver stuck up quite a bit to the diaphragm. This could very well be the reason for Gideon's laborious progression recently. There was ultimately no hole in the diaphragm but part of it was too limp and had started to stretch. As a result, the diaphragm lacks some firmness to provide sufficient support when breathing. They expertly folded this flabby part and stitched it together so that this became a sturdy whole, sturdy enough that they again did not use a plastic patch. They were very pleased.

We put Gideon in a transport incubator as we did outward, also walking him back to the ICU where they had put him on a warming bed. This was quite a difficult moment. There he lay completely lifeless on the tube again with a lot of bells and whistles around it. At one point he started to wake up more because the anaesthetics had worn off and you could see that he was not comfortable. And because he was intubated, when he cried you only saw his face widen but heard nothing. That remains very difficult to see. Yet we saw that despite the intense operation, he looked strong.

By the evening, the doctors noticed that Gideon found the ventilation very annoying and very uncomfortable. Since he was actually breathing very well on his own on the Tube ventilation, they wanted to put him back on CPAP immediately. Wow, we didn't expect that fast. An hour later, he was lying contentedly on the CPAP. A lot calmer than on the Tube.

Now he cries very hoarsely. Actually more squeaking, but at least he can express and move a little more and he looks more like himself again. What a relief. It also seems that when breathing, he moves his chest more evenly and does not contract any more. He is now on morphine again for pain and no feeding for now. Tomorrow they will see if they can take new steps in this. Hopefully he will feel better soon.

We are very curious to see what tomorrow will bring.

16.10u

The operation was successful, Gideon is back in stable condition in the ICU.

It is frankly awful to see him like this again. On life support, uncomfortable and completely slack....

More later

12.50u

We were just called. The preparations (including catheter and long line insertion) did take a bit longer than expected and they are only now going to start the real operation.

Gideon is stable though thankfully.

And we hoped they would be ready by now... So just a little more patience....

12.40u

We are still waiting, we haven't heard anything...

10.00u

We just walked with Gideon to the OR. He stayed calm the whole way so we were able to leave him well behind. Now we are waiting for the signal to pick him up again.

6.45u

Well, we are ready. We are about to visit Gideon to be with him for a while and help with the final preparations for the operation.

Pretty tense, yet confident too!

Braver, braver, even braver, bravest, bravest!!!
Full of confidence and aware of Leadership, you have been active recently. Congratulations! You have also climbed this mountain together with Gideon and God's guidance. How much you have undertaken and also made yourselves heard. Congratulations! Diagonally in the picture I now see your rainbow. All life force is hidden in it. Keep taking care of yourselves, because then you can also be there for your brave son. I hope all the bells and whistles will soon disappear after yesterday. That the warrior may start enjoying life together with his fantastic mum and dad. Many hills will follow but I hope and pray that it may remain just hills. Kind regards and much energy wished during the little moments of rest. rosemareine

Dear Marieke and Nathanael,
What a long, tiring day!!! Waiting, waiting and waiting.
Glad to read that the operation went well.
We pray with you that the recovery will be quick and prosperous!!! That your waiting will be answered. That the day of coming home together may be very near. That normal dad-and-mom life may begin. May Gideon admire his little room at home, may his things be used as planned. That he can grow up like any other boy!
That for you, being away from home is over and a new time is coming, where you can rest and so on.
Dear treasures you are jugglers!!!
Love from us
