Gideon day 8 (off the tube)
9.00u
Gideon is one week old today! And how well he is doing!!!
Last night too, he had another good, stable night. The nurse was very pleased.
We are so happy with our beautiful little man. Of course, we think he is the most beautiful of all. J
We enjoy every moment we can be with him and look forward to the day when the three of us can be together and we can take care of him ourselves. How wonderful that will be!
We slept in a bit today and are about to visit him. We have a meeting with our contact doctor at 11.30am, so maybe we will hear some new things or discuss next steps. We are curious!
14.00u
Today a bit of an emotional day. But for a good reason. When we visited Gideon this morning, the thick stomach tube was already out of his nose because it was no longer needed and they said he could start feeding today. We have since given that around 1pm. How special!
Furthermore, they now only measure 1 point for saturation instead of 2 because they no longer see a risk of pulmonary hypertension. Wow, what a relief!
And to top it all off, they were also already reducing the ventilator so that he can do more on his own so they might be able to take him off the ventilator tomorrow and give him other breathing support instead of a tube in his lungs (or nothing at all if that is not needed). This could also save a lot of mucus development.
All in all, a lot of good news that we are a bit overwhelmed by.
The main reason for all this is that they find him particularly calm and his values remain surprisingly stable despite a few areas of concern, an infection and lots of mucus development.
How happy and grateful we are that it is all going so fast!
22.30u
And as if it were not enough...
When we got to Gideon tonight after dinner he was off the ventilator
YES!!!
(I just screamed really loud with joy in the park on the way to the RMhouse)
How grateful we are!
He now has CPAP, a cap on his nose through which there is a continuous flow of air. This keeps the lungs slightly open and makes it easier for Gideon to breathe on his own. But now he does it all by himself!
Because he seemed to be suffering more from (and fighting against) the breathing tube and too much mucus partly because of that tube, and because he was responding so well to the tapering off of the breathing, they have already taken him off it. This also means that from now on, we will hear from his sounds as there is no longer a tube going through the vocal cords.
He also seems to be digesting the food he has been getting since this afternoon well!
God has surprised us again 🙂
I had made a little poem-like thing this week to express a little bit how we feel, but it is and will be anyway... Little feet, big steps....
The days are long
Mornings are yesterday
Evenings become tomorrow
Time liquid
Like sand between your fingers
Intensely volatile
Vulnerably powerful
Little feet in the sand
Big steps
Carried in HIS hand

How wonderful all of you!!! Your process reminds me so much of how it went with our thirza.... Also a very large defect and such a miraculous recovery. So your little poem is very relatable.
I am soooo happy for you guys! Kisses for Gideon!

Enjoy everything....you are so lucky!!! Also had to think when I read your poem of that other poem about those footsteps in the sand. That there is a trail of footsteps next to yours and when only one footprint remains don't think you are alone....but that you are carried in His arms that are always strong and His feet that are never weak. Happy day !!!

I am cheering (though quietly) with you (everything is already asleep here). We keep praying to God that he may continue to surround your beautiful baby with an army of angels protecting him from illnesses and infections and that he may start to recover. God bless you. Even though I don't know you personally ... you are in my heart.

Hi Nathanael and Marieke,
You are absolutely right, it is a gorgeous, wonderful and too cute little boy! I am melted by the beautiful photos and your loving care! Gideon can totally count on you and you give him the love and touch that he needs so badly now.
How nice that the worries are easing a bit, we are of course continuing to pray, even my (Marjan) mother is praying along and again with her whole prayer circle.
The rainbow is a sign of God's faithfulness, for you and at this time also for us.
God blesses you with miraculous peace. God is faithful, his faithfulness colours the morning.
