Gideon day 9 (1st marsupial)

This morning was a different morning from "normal", hence another slightly late update. We stayed at the hospital all morning now.
Gideon had a very good night with his new way of breathing support and this afternoon they want to try to take him another step further by putting him on the "low flow". That's basically just 2 sprites in his nose with some oxygen support, but then Gideon has to breathe even more on his own. Initially just for 3 hours, see how he copes with that and how his readings stay. But during this time, because he will be on even fewer lines, Marieke will start "pouching" him. On the chest with skin-to-skin contact. That will be another special moment.
As for the rest, from now on he will get 8 x 10ml of breast milk (instead of 6 x 5ml) through the tube as nutrition to get everything in his body going more. From liver to intestines. Then hopefully a lot of other things like his yellowish skin will just get better by itself without any other medication.
And another line down! The arterial line (to draw blood) is out of his hand, an awkward drip-like line that was very much in the way. As his blood gases have been stable for some time, this is no longer necessary.
What a treat that it is all going so well and so fast.

Marieke just spent almost 2 hours "bussing" with Gideon. Mother and child totally happy 🙂 (see photo)
Gideon sat for the first 20 minutes completely at rest amazed with open eyes watching Marieke. You could really see that this was new to him and certainly not unpleasant. Then he fell asleep delightfully with his mother. What a beautiful picture.
Just before Gideon went to lie on Marieke's chest, he went off the CPAP and was allowed to try it out with the "low flow" (so instead of a constant low pressure to keep the lungs a bit open to be able to breathe easier with CPAP, he now had 2 sprites in his nose where some extra oxygen came through with low flow) . This went very well.
He did have to work/breathe a bit harder to process it all, so they are going to build this up a bit now. But so for the first time, it went very well.
And additionally. Now we could see almost his whole face for the first time. What a beautiful face!
His feeding also seems to be going well there. They said we shouldn't count too much on the feeding going well right away, but for now it's going like hell....
Now we are tired and totally happy.

Wow how special pouching seems to me, and how incredibly cool that it is already possible, what a picture! God is so big! And how nice that the feeding is going so well too.
