Gideon half a year!
Today, Gideon is half a year old! Still a special moment. What a lot can happen in six months.
Last Tuesday, we went to Nijmegen for a kidney examination of Gideon. Before birth, his kidneys appeared to be too large which could indicate an obstruction in the ureters. A few months after birth, 1 of the kidneys was much better but the other remained too large. They could not then find a clear indication of what caused them to be enlarged.
The examination now showed that one kidney is now as good as normal but the other is still not as it should be. But a lot better again than 2 months ago, so things are moving in the right direction!
We hoped we could tick this off now too but in 3 months' time, another kidney test and until then, preventive antibiotics to avoid kidney infections. But we are happy that it is improving and that it is not something he would still need surgery for.
Yesterday we spent another half-day in Nijmegen. But this time for (external) control of the diaphragm. The surgeon who operated on Gideon all 3 times looked at him from head to toe, listened to lungs and listened to our story. After all this, he was very satisfied with how Gideon is doing now. He was very surprised by the fact that he spits up so little and the snacks are going so incredibly well. He did stress that it is very important for Gideon to grow even more. Height not so much, but his weight is really still well below the lower limit. Many people don't know that this can also bring dangers. But, we are well on our way, because by now Gideon already weighs 5800 grams! (The average weight for a 6-month-old boy is between 7 and 8 kilos, so we can still add a lot more).
Gideon is super cute and we are SO proud of him. He is also starting to babble a bit now, thinks reading a book is great fun and he almost rolls from back to tummy! Every time he does something new or fun, we look at each other with a big smile and enjoy! Wow, this is our son!
