21.00u Gideon has been very awake a few times and has also talked a bit. He was thirsty. Unfortunately, he wasn't allowed to drink anything yet, but he was allowed some water on a cotton ball. Mjam, that was tasty. Other than that, lots of sleep. There is a good chance we will move to medium care as early as tomorrow, if everything continues to go so well. How grateful we are! | 9.00pm Gideon was awake for a couple of times and he talked a bit. He was thirsty, but unfortanately he couldn't drink something, but he could have some water on a cotton pad. That was nice for him. He is sleeping a lot. There is a strong possibillity that we will move to the medium care tomorrow. Everything went very well! We are so grateful. |
17.45u I am now eating something in the restaurant while Marieke stays with Gideon. He is still not completely comfortable and awake, but that is not very surprising. A catheter, a thoracic drain, an arterial line (drip) in each wrist, drip in his foot, long line (drip) in his neck, epidural (spinal puncture), duodenum tube in the nose (he already had one but will stay put for a while to give nutrition if that can't be done on the stomach yet) and a PEG tube. Not to mention everything that happened to him internally. All organs have been off site, quite a few internal adjustments and the necessary tubes down his throat that were needed for the operation. There is a lot to tell, but that will come further in the coming hours/days. | 5.45pm I am eating something in the restaurant while Marieke stays with Gideon. He's still not entirely comfortable and awake, but that's not so wierd. A catheter, a chest drain, in each wrist an arterial line (IV) IV in his foot, long line (IV) in his neck, epidural (IV in the back), duodenal(?) in the nose (already there but will stay for now to give him food if his stomach cant handle it) and a PEG probe. And then what happened to him internally. All organs out of place, quite a few internal adjustments and the necessary tubes through the throat that were needed for the operation. There is much to tell, but that will come later in the coming hours/days. |
16.40u We have been with him since 3.40pm. First had a short talk with the surgeon and then went to see him. He was already almost completely out of anaesthesia, but in a lot of pain. It took half an hour before he was at rest and the pain relief was sufficient. Now he has occasional moments of nausea with lots of phlegm due to the ventilation, but sleeps in between while we hold his hand. | 4.40pm We have been with him since 3.40pm. First had a talk with the surgeon before we went to him. He was almost awake, but in a lot of pain. It took about half an hour before he was resting, and the painkillers where sufficient. Now he has moments of throwing up a lot of slime due to the breathing tube during the operation, while we hold his hand. |
15.00u Just got a call. They are almost ready. In about 20 minutes he will go to the ICU. It went well and they are satisfied said the surgeon. That's all we know at the moment. | 3.00pm Just got a phone call. They are almost done. In about 20 minutes he will go to the ICU. It went well and they are satisfied the surgeon said. Thats all we know at this moment. |
14.25u Still waiting, taking longer than hoped and expected. | 2.25pm Still waiting, It takes longer than hoped and expected. |

10.20u We are now sitting in the restaurant drinking coffee. Actually reasonably relaxed and at peace. Even Marieke 🙂 But we really notice a calmness that we did not expect now. Yet very different from 3 years back. The word "Immanuel" came up at certain times Sunday and Monday in children's songs and other things. "God with us". And I had a bit of music recorded with that title. And that is what we are experiencing now. Valuable. | 10.20am We are in the restaurant drinking coffee. Fairly relaxed and calmly. Even Marieke 🙂 But we feel more calm than we expected. Quite different from the last time three years ago. The word "Emmanuel" came up several times this sunday and monday, in children's songs and other things. "God with us". And I recorded a song saturday night with the same title. And that is what we are experiencing right now. Precious. |
9.20u Gideon entered the anaesthesia calmly. They are now inserting the central line and making all other preparations. They will probably start the abdominal surgery around 10.30am. | 9.20am Gideon was anaesthetised calmly. The doctors are taking all the necessary preparations before operating. They expect to start the operation around 10.30am (dutch time). |
08.40u It goes on and we go now. | 08.40am Its a go. We go now. |
08.00u Gideon was awake by 5.30am, cheerful and sociable as ever. Even though the nurses had come by to discuss everything again, the most important thing for him was to be allowed into the big bath as soon as possible. And that's where we are now. Him in the bath and me typing away while Marieke goes to get something to eat because Gideon has to stay sober now. He got some tube-fed concentrate last night and last night so he is off to a good start in that respect. | 08.00am Gideon was awake at 5.40am, happy and excited as ever. Despite the visit from the nurse explaining the day once again, his main goal was to go to "the big bath". And thats where we are now. He's in the bath while I type something and Marieke is eating breakfast because Gideon has to stay sober. Yesterday evening he got his powermeal throug the feedingtube so he starts this day really good. |
07.00u Today is the day. Operation day. We will be told shortly whether we get a go. Yesterday, the ICU was full so we hope a spot has opened up now, otherwise the operation cannot go ahead. Thus begins an exciting day. | 07.00am Today is the day. Operationday. Now we first hear if we are good to go. Yesterday the ICU was full and the operation can only continue when there is a place available. |

Dear Marieke and Nathanael, what an exciting day but what lovely photos of a happy Gideon! I pray with you that God gives protection on all fronts in these next few hours, wisdom to the doctors, that their hands are blessed and that Gideon as well as you will weather all this well. Strength to you too. And peace!
